In ALL Circumstances

Don’t you just love it when the Lord reminds you of something you need at just the right moment?

This morning I woke up particularly grumpy. Add to that grumpiness chronic sleep deprivation which has reached such a level that my current fantasy is to rent a motel room – alone – just so I can get one good night of sleep. Pretty sad, hunh?

School begins here with Bible class. After starting my middle children on drawing scale models of the tabernacle, I turned my attention to the little guys. They are memorizing ABC verses, a different verse each week and this week we are up to G. I wearily pushed the CD in the player, forwarded to track 7, and there it was – the message I needed to hear!

“Give thanks in,
Give thanks in,
All circumstances,
For this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus!” (I Thes. 5:18)

Bull’s-eye! Penetrating right to the division of soul and spirit, joints and marrow, down to the recesses of my heart. Not only should my thanks-giving not be dependent on good feelings or particular circumstances, but it is actually His will (not just a good idea) that I give thanks in all situations. Thank You, Lord, for this timely reminder!

By the way, the CD we were listening is called Sing the Word from A to Z, done by the Harrow family, a homeschooling family from New York state. This and a second we have by them titled New Commandment are some of my favorite kids’ albums. How I love to hear my children walking around the house singing songs like, “Even a child is known by is actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right…” or “Children, obey your parents in everything,…” Mom and Dad Harrow are graduates of the Eastman School of Music, so this is no ordinary kids’ music. There’s a wonderful variety in musical styles, with lovely arrangements played by brass and woodwind instruments. Every song is straight Scripture, a single verse or longer passage. My only quibble is that several translations are used on each album. New Commandment has verses in KJV and NKJV while Sing the Word has verses from NIV and KJV.

The Lord has a way of knowing and planning our days, even down to a little message picked especially for us. How often I have had that happen, usually in the form of one of the kids reciting a verse to me in a gentle reminder.

As to the singing, it is pure pleasure. My girls favorite books to read in their spare time are the Bible, Bible stories and the hymnal. It is fun to see Shoshi sounding out the words to a hymn and then listen to Bethie helping her to learn the tune. What a blessing.
