I didn't remember him throwing up, but my daughter Kristen reminded me of a time when we were eating hamburgers that she had made for dinner. My picky eater was doing fine until he realized she had put onion soup in the mix, (horrors - onions!) and he started throwing up into his father's hands.

I don't think there is any one-size-fits-all answer to dealing with a finicky eater, and it requires wisdom, patience, and gentle persistence. My formerly picky one, though he can't remember specific ages, does tell me now that he was very much in control of whether he gagged or not, and I believe this to be true. (Here's a short post I wrote about his picky eating when he was 4: http://nonniesnotes.blogspot.com/2005/03/sons-are-heritage-from-lord.html) It turned out that the taco soup for breakfast episode was about the last time he ever had to be re-served a meal at a later one. Amazing how quickly seeing the crepes his siblings were eating cured that problem.

One of the simple things that helps our children want to eat what they are served is that we offer a cookie (or occasionally something more exciting) after dinner to those who have eaten what they were required to. We get near 100% participation all the time. (And remember, with little ones, keep those quantities small, especially if it is a new or peculiar item. Trying one bite may be enough.)

A blog I quite enjoy reading, "Like Mother, Like Daughter" has a helpful post on dealing with picky eaters. The author, Leila, has a lot of sensible advice. The comments are interesting as well.

http://ourmothersdaughters.blogspot.com/2012/08/ask-auntie-leila-picky-eaters-and-best.html

Hope that helps!Annehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08407636240006454920noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9283473.post-6076721347675022742012-08-22T17:00:32.483-04:002012-08-22T17:00:32.483-04:00helpful tips. What do you advise a mom of a picky eater who gags and throws up everytime he eats something he doesn't like? Would you punish him even though it seems like something he can't really control at this age (he's four)? What puts even more weight to your words is the fact that I have seen and met the fruit of your labors, including Kara herself. I pray that I raise my children as well as you did yours.
